J. Gregory Carr, MD.
Dr. Carr obtained his MD from the University of Mississippi Medical Center in 1987. He worked as a general practitioner for 4 years in rural Tennessee prior to pursuing a career in anesthesiology.
It was during his residency at the University of Kentucky that he developed a keen interest not only in the anesthetic effects on the central nervous system, but more specifically in neuroanatomy and neurophysiology.
Dr. Carr’s interest in neuroscience continued and after finishing residency, he obtained a fellowship position in neuroanesthesia at Shands Hospital in Gainesville, FL, an institution renowned for its reputation in neuroscience.
After completing his fellowship training Dr. Carr moved back to Lexington, KY where he worked as an assistant professor of anesthesiology at UK Medical Center. He worked closely with the department of neurosurgery teaching neurological monitoring techniques to anesthesiology residents during difficult and complicated neurosurgical cases.
A move to the greater Chicago area shifted his focus. As Chairman of Anesthesia at a local area hospital with a large exposure to cardiac surgery, Dr. Carr’s expertise in “neuro protection” was put to good use. He was instrumental in administering as well as teaching and monitoring the complicated and delicate technique of “circulatory arrest”, where the brain is put deeply asleep and literally “on ice” while the surgeons work on the great vessels entering and exiting the heart, as well as monitoring the EEG for signs of adequate anesthetic depth during surgery on the vessels feeding the brain.
His training in advanced Central Nervous System monitoring techniques and interest in neuroscience in general led him to the field of neurofeedback/ neurotherapy. He's spent several years in the didactic process of learning techniques fundamental to the practice and is now open for business in his Lisle, IL office.
