Therapeutic Benefits and Effects of Weighted and Sensory Items

In our office we use a variety of weighted and sensory items to aid our patients during their treatment session. We have weighted lap pads and weighted neck wraps that our patients use during session to provide deep pressure to aid in concentration and relaxation. We also have bean bags and other bean bag type "fidgets" to help aid some of our patients with focus and attention during their session.

Would would benefit from using weighted  or sensory items?

Weighted items in general have a calming effect. Items like weighted blankets and weighted vests have therapeutic benefits that can help by providing deep pressure to muscles.

For example, people who have PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) can find comfort in the deep pressure touch, which helps the body release serotonin and dopamine, two chemicals that help to calm the body.

People suffering from insomnia can benefit from a weighted blanket to help them relax their body.

A weighted blanket or vest can also help people with hypersensitivity to focus, so they can concentrate on learning valuable skills.

Providing a fidget or bean bag to an adult or child with ADD/ADHD to manipulate during solitary work can be calming. These items can provide an outlet to release their restlessness. Rather than continuously moving their body or losing focus, they can manipulate their fidget in their lap or on their desk while maintaining focus on their current task.

Fidgets have particular properties that work well in conjuction with our sensory systems. The premise is that children or adults with special needs, with learning disabilities, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), Tourette’s syndrome, autism (ASD), anxiety disorder or obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), reduce their excessive movements and increase their focus through the handling of a fidget. Busy the hands to calm the mind.
